The research unit  is mainly focused on the experimentation of emerging technologies enabling both hardware and software solutions such as the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), UltraWideBand (UWB), Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID), embedded systems, etc.

Particular attention is paid to the optimization of network protocols, the distributed software architectures, the mobile applications, the emergent approaches based on the Edge and Fog Computing paradigms, the Digital Twin, etc.

The research unit investigates the correlation among specific enabling technologies such as DLT, BlockChain and AI in the IoT context. In addition, particular attention is focused on innovative positioning systems based on innovative low cost and low power technologies. Furthermore, the research activities investigate the opportunity to design innovative architectures and systems capable of orchestrating heterogeneous enabling technologies for smart environments. This research unit benefits from the support and the cooperation of the other experimental Research Units, such as the ones dedicated to the exploitation of sensors and AI, but it also provides useful support to the various applied research units focused on specific verticalizations.

The UniSalento research laboratories involved in this specific Research Unit include the ones belonging to scientific sectors such as ING-INF/05, ING-INF/01 and ING-INF/02.
